Be it known that Kappa
Kappa Psi, National Honorary
Fraternity for College Band Members, is an organization operating exclusively
in the field of college and university bands, and for the following several
purposes:
1. To PROMOTE the
existence and welfare of the college and university bands and to cultivate
at
large a wholesome respect for their activities
and achievements.
2. To HONOR outstanding band members through privilege of membership
extended as a reward for technical achievement and appreciation for
the best in music.
3. To STIMULATE campus leadership and promulgate an uncompromising
respect through the medium of the college band for gracious conduct,
good taste,
and unswerving loyalty.
4. To FOSTER a close relationship between college bands and promote
a high average of attainment by the performance of good music and
selection of worthwhile projects.
5. To PROVIDE a pleasant and helpful social experience for all engaged
in college band work and to cooperate with other musical organizations
in any
matter consistent
with the purposes of the institution at which chapters are located.

Kappa Kappa Psi Preamble
In the years that followed WWI, a movement developed among college and university
bands, searching for some motivating force that would create a greater interest
in band music. At that time, there were a few national organizations for
professional musicians, but none exclusively for college and university bandsmen.
Thus, Kappa Kappa Psi was founded November 27th, 1919, at what is now Oklahoma
State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Kappa Kappa Psi is a Recognition Society. A Recognition Society is an
organization which confers membership in recognition of a student’s interest and participation
in some field of collegiate study with more liberal membership requirements
than those prescribed by honor societies. In basic terms, Recognition Societies
accept all types of people, rather then limiting membership to music majors.
The Kappa Nu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi was founded on April 25th, 1999, at
Northern Illinois University. One distinct feature about our chapter was
that our Founding Fathers were all female. Despite being a young chapter,
we have already accomplished multitudes. Four times a year. The chapter gets
together to pick up trash along the highway, in conjunction with I.D.O.T.
Also, as each class is initiated, they must complete a group community service
project. In the past these projects have included making “boom pipes” for
elementary school music programs, a detailed membership roster, and instrument
maintenance for the Huskie Marching Band. Larger projects completed by the
chapter include raising 1,300 dollars for a new music cabinet to be placed
in the School of Music here at N.I.U, and in the spring of 2003, Kappa Nu
hosted the North Central District Convention at the ripe old age of four.
Kappa Nu continues to strive for the highest by furthering active and
prospective member education in the ways of the Fraternity.
